When the ultimatum for Japan was drawn up why wouldn't America negotiate to let the emporer retain some power?

This was a matter for great debate among the Western Allies. Really, the objection was that it would make a dent in the unconditional surrender demands. It's really a shame that the question of Hirohito wasn't resolved sooner, as it MIGHT have avoided the need for atomic bombing.

He would have just risin up again and we would have been back to square one. America demanded a full and unconditional surrender because Japan was so corrupt.
