Shel Silverstein for children. Silverstein writes great poetry and short books for children, which are generally humerous and entertaining.

Poe is great as well. I don't necessarily like what his short stories and poetry are about, but I like the way he writes- extensive vocabulary, precise words, building suspense, the incorporating some Latin words, etc.. In other words, I really like his style of writing rather than the plot.

Edgar Allan Poe was an amazingly talented writer with alcohol and drug problems from trying to self-medicate his mental illness; Shel Silverstein was a hippie on permanent mental vacation. Silverstein's stuff is mildly amusing and vaguely disturbing when you're about 8; Poe's will haunt you for a lifetime. I vote for Poe.

I think they are both great. Edgar Allen Poe was more dark and gothic whereas Silverstein is more comical and childlike. I personally think that their styles are completely different. If you're looking to do an author study, you may be able to find more info on Poe.

Poe's too dark for me. Shel's more contemporary and has humor so I like him better.

Personally, I like Poe more. He's so dark, and all his poems are meaningful, even if they are sad. He's different, in other words.
