Nobody came up with the idea that humans evolved from monkeys because we didn't. We had a shared ancestor from which other primates and humans evolved separately from.

Lamark was a zoologist, and his ideas on classifications are still used today. He was the one who helped to order species by their relationships. Much of what was done based on his systems are being confirmed today by DNA analysis.
He was, however, smart enough to understand the difference between sharing a common ancestor and evolving from. He would have pointed out that although you and your cousin share grandparents, you did not evolve from your cousin.
So you are the one who is wrong, Lamark never said that people came from monkeys. Only people who don't understand the science have said that.

Nobody. Humans and monkeys are both modern animals but they had a common ancestor some millions of years ago that was neither human nor monkey. Mokeys split from the line that evolved into humans well before the various apes split off. The last split was between the chimpanzees and humans but humans did not evolve from chimpanzees any more than they evolved from monkeys. They had a common ancestor from which they all evolved but they didn't evolve from each other.

The idea of evolution was around long before Darwin. Darwin is famous for two things, he provided an iron clad case in favor of evolution and he provided a mechanism for evolution.
Lamark had an earlier theory, but it was discounted as it did not stand up to observation.
Probably Erasmus Darwin proposed the idea earlier but trying to say who was first is almost impossible.

It was someone who didn't understand the theory of evolution. Humans evolved from a common ancestor with monkey's, but not from monkeys. Most people don't really understand this, and it is a common fighting point between creationists and evolutionists.

Course it was Charles Darwin! He wrote "The Origin of the Species" and there was Charles Darwin's "Theory of Evolution". If you have any doubt about that read the entry in Encyclopedia Britannica.

It was some Victorian misapprehension of Darwin's work, but exactly " who " escapes me. Please do not keep us in the dark, if no one knows.
PS I think Lamark is the wrong answer. Put countervailing evidence here, or e-mail me such evidence.

Charles Darwin did. he 'invented' the theory of evolution.
ps he didnt say we directly descend from monkeys, but we could decend from the same species of which monkeys descended
