a faster processor would do nothing for you ... put a raid card in it and get a couple of 10000rpm harddrives and raid them together ... make sure u have about a gig or more of memory .. and if ur board allows run it in dual channel and maybe overclock it alittle and bump the voltage up ... that should zippify it ...

There is a fine balance to everything. You can't overdo onething without the other. Get to the source of the weakest link.
The cheapest and fastest way to achieve what you want in deccreasing order of importance:
add more RAM. Then, of course your CPU (dualcore). Your HDD (Sata drives with at least 8ms accesstime and a speed of 9600 rpm), your Video card, then your Main Board. Of course if you change your CPU, make sure your MB supports it otherwise you will end up replacing the MB. Same is true of SATA (serial) drive. What you currently have, I think is a PATA drive (Parallel).
You need DSL for your internet for speed. With the release of Vista, speed has taken on an added significance.
Golden rule: the need for speed is never ending. Define your wants and needs. Then look at the size of your wallet. That should pretty well determine which way you go.
I can see you attempting RAM upgrade first. Try atleast for 1GB.

GOOGLE IT --- Just kidding.
RAM;
Random Access Memory
Memory used by computers to store the currently running operating system, programs, and open files. Erased when power is turned off.
It's the thing a computer never has enough of. It's basically speed.

First & above all ... the CPU.
Second ... the amount of RAM.
Way in Third (not usually an issue on home PCs) ... Hard Disk access speed.
**** Why are Intel & AMD constantly building faster processors if all you need to do is add RAM or put in an expensive RAID system ... "duh" ....I am sooooooo disapointed with some of these answers ...

procesor = how fast can it think
memory(ram) = how much stuff can it do at the same time.
Hard disk HDD = how fast can you read a file
basically dont open too much stuff at the same time.
PS:
computers are as fast as their slowest component usually the HDD

Installing RAM is probably the cheapest and most effective upgrade you can do for your computer.

heay guy's get real, your motherboard is the main one. you could have the fastest cpu, ram, hardrive. if the motherboard don't support it, it is useless.. if you want fast, get a 1066 fsb motherboard, then it will be smoking...........
