3 x 3 is actually a lumber dimension, and not truly 3" x 3" either. The measurements are taken before final planing, so after planing, the lumber is actually closer to 2-5/8" x 2-5/8"
I believe 3 x 3 is also a musical tempo or rhythm.
Think outside the box, folks. It's not necessarily a math problem!
