The dry ice itself is a liquid encased in a sealed plastic block. You put the plastic block in the freezer to freeze it. You put the frozen plastic block in the cooler to keep things cold. It's called dry ice because it doesn't melt and it's not prone to surface condensation.
The last dry ice I bought was two blocks in a thin cardboard wrapper.

In a plastic bag. I would suggest then putting it in a cooler of some sorts, preferably a foam cooler.

Usually, they are wrapped in inner plastic and paper as the outer covering so that your fingers and hands will not be stuck.
Use thick cotton or thermal gloves not latex gloves because the extreme COLDNESS can burn you. Ha ha. cold and burn.
Anyway, buy this with a responsible adult.

In a bag. ( a really cool experiment you can do with dry ice is put it in water and watch it foam...and foam....and foam...but the cool thing is before it touches anything it turns into a gas...its so cool)
