check with wikipedia for a lot more info on the Japanese feudal system. but to give you a start: the feudal system started of with a lord often called a daimyo (I think I spelled that right). the daimyo was the head of his clan who had been given or had acquired the right to govern territory within Japan. his samuri were the warriors who had pledged to serve him or the clan through out their life. often when the lord died several of his samuri would commit suicide to join him in the next life this was known as sepuku. when they failed they would commit suicide know as harikari. the difference harikari was a way to attone for some misdeed.
the samuri code known as bushido was a complex code similar to the European knights code of chivalry. it mainly included how they were suppose to be loyal to their lord and clan, and how the treated the other classes. it should be noted that samuri did not always live up to the ideals of bushido. some frequently abused their privilalege especially when came to treating the other classes.
the classes in Japan were divided between classes such as a merchant class, tradesman class, a priest class, and peasant class. the best way to describe the relationship between the warrior and say the merchant class is provided in Yoshikawa's novel Musashi; where a merchant says "let the warriors have the flowers while we have the fruit." Yoshikawa's Musashi, inspired by a real person, is a great novel to read for information on Japanese class system, also try reading the novel Tokido Road, for more info.
