I am looking into buying a Tivo.
I am curious, what is the subscription fee for? (If the Tivo connects to my internet connection, why do I need to pay Tivo??)
And it says I need a phone line to set up the tivo initially....I don't have a phone line, but my parents do...can I set up the tivo at my parents house with their phone line, and then bring it back to my house and connect it to my internet network?

You pay a monthly fee for TIVO to keep up with the latest schedules in your area.

Every day TIVO gets the latest TV schedules for your area so you can simply tell it to record every episode of a given show & it will do it.

I didn't connect my TIVO to a phone line. I connected it right to the internet. TIVO has an ethernet port. You no longer have to provide a phone connection.

I've owned a tivo for many years and it doesn't connect to your internet. All it needs is a landline so it can call up the service and download all the new info each day. It does this at 4am. The service fee pays for the guide and information that you get everyday to be able to use the machine. I feel that the fee is ridiculous tho.

it is also possible to download the initial data using your parents' phone, then move the tivo to your internet connection.
