i was working at my retail clothing store when i saw this man come in the store saying he was going to take pictures around our store and this was part of secret shopping.. so he proceeded and took about 8 pix of our clothing displays. my coworker says we shouldntve let him since they could close us down etc...and we needed a permission slip. has anyone else had this and what happened afterward?

Actually, competitors will try to sneak in and take pictures to see what you are doing and often copy it or improve upon it.. also they will come in and take down prices for competitor mark downs, etc.. Most companies don't allow competitors to do this..

In clothing stores, you can't take pictures in general. Imaging people taking pictures in dressing rooms and getting put on the internet.

Also, the company is liable for things in the pictures. Say someone is stealing and it is caught in a photo and that person gets away. The staff gets in trouble because they didn't catch it and they have to worry about the theif.

In short, the pictures can be used against the store. The permission slip is to ensure that the store cannot be held liable for things in the photo.

I used to work at a retail store and we weren't allowed to let anyone take photos because it is illegal. It is much harder now with camera phones. I wish I had an answer for you. I'm not too sure as to what will happen. I do know in the future if anyone tries to take pictures inside your store don't let them. He could have been a secret shopper testing you maybe. Good luck!
