Actually you are mistaken about this. The death penalty is not a deterrent (doesn't persuade other people not to commit murder.)
States with the death penalty actually have higher murder rates than states that do not have it. (FBI Report- see sources).
Also, most people who commit murder don't think they will be caught (that is, if they think at all.)
The United States has a significantly higher homicide rate than all of Western Europe and Canada, which do not have it. These are the nations whose societies are most like ours.
If this is a homework assignment, you should make sure you have the facts and the sources.
There are other reasons to oppose the death penalty, also verifiable and sourced-
It costs more than life imprisonment.
Over 120 innocent people were sentenced to death (fortunately released with evidence of their innocence.) Many of them had already served over a decade and in a speeded up process, would have been killed by now, in our name. DNA is available in less than 20% of all murder cases, and it cannot guarantee we will not execute an innocent person.
Life without parole is an available sentence in 48 states. It means what it says and it is no picnic to be locked in a tiny cell, 23 hours a day, forever.
Here are a couple of reasons our prisons are so crowded. We lock up people who have committed low level drug offense for long terms.
Did you know that over 50% of inmates in the United States have needed treatment for mental illness. Before the 1970's there were treatment facilities for these people. Those have been closed and people who really need help were released into the streets, without any support system. Hospitals were supposed to be replaced by community mental health facilities. That did not happen.

Death Penalty is not an effort of population control but instead legal payment of responsibility of crime - such as the taking of the life of another.
Also releases other citizens from the financial burden of required care for these persons.....such as medical, legal, etc.
Think about it - you the family member are being required to pay tax money for the care of the person who killed your loved one.
Most importantly it is the following of the instructions from the Scriptures in regard to responsibility for your own actions.
It is not meant to be for the betterment of the person committing the crime for they made a choice for themselves and the person they deprived of further life.
It is also a teaching deterent for other persons who might wish to take this same choice with anothers life.

Suppose a murderer kills 10 people. He has 3 kids and teach them to murder. When they grow up, they kill 10 people each and they have 3 kids each. The grandkids grow up and kill 10 people each. That's 130 people killed that would not have died if the first person was electrocuted. You can continue the same logic and get 100's and 1000's more that would be saved.

Death penalty as a deterrent. Prisoners executed would not be a risk to the rest of the prison population.
