The most important tips I can think of for straight-forwards new writing:
Make sure the very first paragraph, also known as the lede, contains the very most important information of the story.

Some other important things to know:
-In newspaper stories paragraphs are much shorter than in more formal writing.
-Be concise. Don't write confusing, long sentences. You're job is to make the topic as understandable to the reader as possible.

Make sure you provide detailed information: Who, What, Were, Why, When, and How.

Report only the facts and not your opinions.
