Bought an electric space heater at Lowes (Lasko brand). Works wonderful, is quiet and oscelates and has temp. control. We used it in a bedroom suite/bath area instead of central heat, and our electric bill will down considerably. We put the central thermostat on 50 degrees, which kept the rest of the house cool, but we weren't really staying in the rest of the house.

If you live in a cold climate your best advice is to buy at least a 90% efficient furnace. You can control temperatures in each room through the use of zoning controls, however this can be quite costly. Leaving your furnace fan continuously on gives a better distribution of supply air and will not harm the fan motor, nor does it make a large difference in the electric bill. Proper insulation and keeping your thermostat at a lower temp will save several dollars in most cases. The problem with space heaters is most use electricity which is the most expensive form of heating.

1 watt of electricity produces 3.14 btus of heat. A watt is a watt, regardless of whether it is produced in a central air system (which may be rated at 15000 watts) or a space heater (which may be rated at 5000 watts). The problem will be that the space heater will need to run continuously to keep you warm. The advantage to a small space heater would be, that you can close off the rest of the house from your bedroom and run the space heater to warm the bedroom only, instead of a central system that would need to work to heat the whole house.

If your house is wired for ceiling fans, go to Lowes and talk to them about heated ceiling fans. The have one which will get you some tax credit, and lets you have heat in just the room you're using. Since the heat is where you need it, you feel warmer then if you have a space heater. It sounds bizare, but it works.

REDBIRD IS CORRECT. IF YOU GIVE MORE PARTICULARS ON YOUR HEAT(GAS/ELECTRIC/WALL HEATER/FURNACE) AND WHAT FUEL THE SPACE HEATERS WOULD USE, YOU COULD GET MORE DETAILED ANSWERS.
