Some kids have very sensitive skin and need a seperate detergent for their laundry. Dreft was what I used, but that was a long time ago and there might be other brands out there. I only used it on the one with sensative skin, though. I used regular laundry detergent for the others, it saved time since I could do all the laundry at once and didn't have to seperate clothes. Saving time is important when you have a new baby and time is at a premium.
Also, babies do better when they have a regular routine. Its not a need, but it helps you and the child.

1) love & cuddling
2) crib
3) car seat
4) diapers
5) wipes/cloths
6) sleepers (onesie outfits)
7) some good fuzzy blankets (the rich pile ones)
8) we couldn't live without our bouncer seat
9) 1 or 2 outfits to go out in...don't spend a tom of $$ on cutesy outfits...they won't wear them but maybe once
10) swaddling blankets...can be used as car rags after baby doesn't need them anymore
11) change table...my advice get one that can easily convert into a dresser after...one less piece of furniture to buy later
12) bibs...oh you will be amazed at all the drool the little one can leak out
13) lanolin ointment if you are nursing...soothes chapped & sore feeding areas
14) socks...can also double as mitts if they scratch themselves in their sleep
15) baby soap & laundry detergent
16) Gripe water...the best belly ache medicine
17) rocking chair...the best thing for those 3am wake up calls
18) hugs
19) kisses
20) affection

I think everyone else pretty much summed it up, so I won't bother with the long list. But the one thing that i have noticed that no-one has mentioned is a baby monitor. And just as I'm typing this now, I'm also thinking that no-one mentioned Tempra or Tylenol, maybe they did, but, I don't think so. Good luck and Congrats.
