I have 8 fish in a 29 gallon tank. 3 tiger 3 green tiger barbs and 1 pleco along with the bala. The bala will eat the food pelet and then spit it out. Is it because they need a certain type of food?

Well, some food are more palatable than others. Try a good flake food. To increase his appetite feed frozen brine shrimp that can be found in any pet store that deals with fish. Your fish will be fine in 29 gallons. Most fish that can grow large will not be accommodated in our tanks. He will be fine. Good luck and I believe things will improve soon.

Many fish will take a pellet into their mouths then spit it back out repeatedly to soften it up. If he really isn't eating anything, like not picking it back up after, try offering a different type of flake or pellet. A bala should eat pretty well.

However, a bigger concern would be the size of the tank. Bala sharks will outgrow a 30 gallon tank in very short order. As adults, they need about 125 gallons for a small school of them (and they are schoolers, they are not comfortable alone).

Balas are a schooling fish... and that's too small of a tank for a bala anyway.

Get him a minimum 55 gallon tank and some friends to swim with...

You might also want to try flake food or blood worms.
