No. The Rolling Stones have to be #1 with combined tour and record sales. They're still going after 45 years. I'm not sure where the Beatles are, but probably #1 with record sales, followed by Elvis and Michael Jackson. Pink Floyd would probably be higher up than U2, as well as the Eagles.

Do you mean ever? No. I don't like U2 that much,...but I'm still going to try and be objective about this. The Rolling Stones were a FAR more succesful band. They sold more albums. They were a lot more influential. They were a lot more original (U2 is a second rate Clash). There is no way that U2 compares in any way to the stones. None. The exact same case is true for The Who. The Who were also a far bigger, more important band. Those two are obvious. There are other bands I think are bigger as well....Led Zeppelin (although I can't stand them).
As far as current bands....I could make an argument that the Chilli Peppers are as succesful as U2. At least in this country. The Chilli Peppers have been around for about the same period of time, but are still releasing great work. U2's recent work has been lame remakes of Achtung baby. Which was a pretty lame album to begin with.
If you want to measure this by influence....U2 isn't in the running. They were a poor man's Clash. Nothing they did was original or influential.

There are lots of great bands that have been popular for decades longer than them. Also I have never heard someone doing a cover of a U2 song they way they do for Beatles , Stones, Pink Floyd, Grateful Dead or even Big Brother and the Holding Company.
I wish music stores still had oldies or classic rock sections and did not mix them in the way they do now. It would be clearer to you if you could walk through a section like that.

Wow interesting question. I think U2 have probably overtaken the Beatles. The Beatles were around from 1960-1970 (then with a sort of reunion between 94-96), where as U2 have been around since 1976 and are still performing now.

Wow, so many wonderful bands and U2 is surely one of them. The Dead, the Rolling Stones, PINK FLOYD:) - such amazing bands to fit that #2 slot for classic rock! The Beatles are, of course, number one. =) There are SO many others I could list, though.
For the band with its main members alive and putting work out together today, U2 is incredible but the Rolling Stones are a huge one too. The rest depends on choice.

My personal opinion is that The Beatles were the biggest band from the last generation, and now, U2 has taken their place in ours. They are most definetly number 2 (and the beatles are most definetly number 1)

Well the beatles were not really around for long, just pumped a lot of tracks out while they were there.
If you are talking about time served then it has to be the Rolling Stones who still perform to this day even though they are old and grey. I love U2 but imagine they'd be third if talking rock music x

wow. i dont know why the hell anyone would say green day would be up there some day...sellouts. obviously the rock and hippy bands of the yesteryears like zeppelin and floyd and the beatles were definitely the biggest bands of...well...all time. nowadays, bands dont make money because of downloading and the fact that there is so much more variety. there arent any bands that are like...they have the biggest hits, they are all pop and rap. i mean of course rock is still out there...foo fighters, the trews, wolfmother.
