Limited welfare. Some people are on it for life and then their kids, and grand kids. Food stamps should be good for limited supplies and abuses should result in permanent termination of benefits. I have seen people exchanging food for booze. I am sure they do it for drugs as well. I also think that prisons should be self sufficient. They should grow their own food and provide services to generate cash for the upkeep of the detention facility. Hard core criminals can be outsourced to Mexico or Turkey where they can be cheaply maintained and learn while they are there. Welfare money should be going into a better education system.

No, welfare should not exist, but it is really not a big problem. It is a very small piece of the pie.
What should be done away with is other wealth-distributing programs like Social Security. Unfortunately, we have been promised these benefits and people have planned their retirements around the help of SS, so it would be unfair to pull the plug now. And since the young are paying for the old, we cannot stop them from paying or else we could not finance it.
Basically FDR was a short-sighted, socialist President who does not deserve an ounce of the credit he gets for his tenure.

No welfare should not be done away with entirely, it should be reformed and as many States, such as Wisconsin, have done put strict guidelines in place to reduce fraud and rid the system of freeloaders. As for Social Security being a wealth distribution program, I don't see it that way. For one, Social Security was never promised as a Full Fledged Retirement Fund but only a supplement to the Retirement Savings you should have taken responsibility for. There are many problems with Social Security and the number 1 problem are the Politicians. They have robbed and plundered the fund at every chance with Economist for years warning that problems were looming. True to American culture, they took the "Don't fix it til it's fully broke" attitude. It's just about broke.

Welfare is like communism in the USSR- when life support is guaranteed, there is no motivation to do better. Alcoholism and drug use skyrocket, and despair sets in. Welfare was meant to be short-term.
Oh, and by the way, this system only encourages the very non-family, individual-oriented way of thinking-
family is no one to me. I don't have to do anything for anyone.
I want my privacy, etc.
Families have only fallen furhter apart because of the system.
We Westerners, and especially Amercians, are the most selfish people I have ever heard of. Try being an Easterner for a day, for whom the group is utterly and totally more important than the self.
WE are disgusting.

I think that the more people become isolated sitting behind gaming consoles and computers they lose sense of reality. If anyone thinks that welfare should not exist I would invite them to spend an afternoon with with me and allow me to introduce them to several hundred folks who could not survive without it. A certain percentage of our population will always be born disabled, or will become disabled for various reasons. It is our duty as a society to care for those who can't care for themselves.
I imagine if one works and live in the burbs living a neo con lifestyle they are probably completely un-aware there are people in such need out there. You know the small minded sorts who think people are retarded and deformed by choice and are just faking it, or somehow they can get better.

To answer your question, yes there should be welfare. There will always be people in need and their well being has to take precedence over abuse.
