What would cause diarrhea on, right before, or right after, your period pretty much every month? And what could you do to prevent it?

It could be a couple of things. First of all, hormones involved in creating your period have been linked to IBS flare ups. IBS is Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Not a serious disease, but it can be an annoying problem. Research it on the Internet. I have this problem.

Also, it could have something to do with the medication you take for cramps. It may irritate your digestive system and cause the diarrhea.

You can help prevent it by watching what you eat. Sensible healthy foods and not a package of cookies to satisfy the PMS you might be experiencing! Over the counter anti-diarrheal medication may help.

At any rate, you should talk to your Doctor. He/she will be the only one that can make a proper diagnosis.

At the time of your period your body releases prostaglandins. It is responsible for the cramping you experience but it also causes diarrhea. There are medications that are antiprostaglandins.....the simpliest one is Motrin....or ibuprofen. It helps to take it before you expect your period and keep it in your system for the time you usually experience these symptoms. I know...I am a woman...and a health care provider. If this doesn't help you...see your health care provider...perscription strength can be ordered...or simular medications that require a 'script can be tried.

More often than not, I go #2 more before Aunt Flo visits. Every body has different "side effects" Some women get cramps. You get the runs. Maybe you could take an anti diarrheal medicine.

It is really common because of all the changes your body goes through prior to your period. There is little you can do to help this except go easy on the foods you eat.

It's a hormone thing. When it first starts, take Immodium(if you can). You may want to check with your Dr./Gyno. They may have better answers. This is not something that all women go through.

its because of the contractions that your uterus goes through during your period, that also affects your intestines. there is really nothing you can do about it but learn what foods to eat and which foods not to. good luck
