muratic acid from the local hardware in a spray bottle but dont get it on anything else and o yes it really stinks but thats how i cleaned mine our house was built in 1924 and the brick i cleaned looks NEW. also works to clean concrete or cement steps. guaranteed

I just read an article about this. (Of course, I can't remember where I read it!)
It said that the cause is a down draft from the fireplace.
It suggested a piece that you can have installed on the roof at your fireplace that moves with the wind so it doesn't push back down so bad.
I wish I could be more specific.
I'm sure you could call a professional and they would know exactly what I'm talking about.
