(tevye)
is this the little girl i carried,
is this the little boy at play?

(golde)
i don't remember growing older,
when did they?

(tevye)
when did she get to be a beauty,
when did he grow to be so tall?

(golde)
wasn't it yesterday when they were small?

(men)
sunrise, sunset (x2),
swiftly flow the days.

(women)
seedlings turn overnight to sunflowers,
blossoming even as we gaze.

(everyone)
sunrise, sunset (x2),
swiftly fly the years,
one season following another,
laiden with happiness and tears.

(tevye)
what words of wisdom can i give them,
how can i help to ease their way?

(golde)
now they must learn from one another,
day by day.

(perchik)
they look so natural together.

(hodel)
just like two newlyweds should be.

(perchik and hodel)
is there a canopy in store for me?

sunrise, sunset (x2),
swiftly fly the years,
one season following another,
laiden with happiness,
and tears

Anatevka, Anatevka
Underfed overworked Anatevka
Where else could sabbath be so sweet?

Anatevka, Anatevka
intimate, obstinate Anatevka
Where I know everyone I meet.

Soon I'll be a stranger in a strange new place
Searching for an old familiar face
from Anatevka

Anatevka, Anatevka
I belong in Anatevka
Dear little village little town of mine

The theme of the play is assimilation vs tradition in the 1800s. An orthodox Jewish man has 5 daughters. His 3 oldest are ready for marriage- one decides to go against tradition and the Jewish Faith and marry someone Catholic. One daughter decides she does not want to be "matched" with someone but marry her childhood sweetheart, and the other daughter marries a rabbinical student with very progressive ideas about equality and freedom. Meanwhile the Jews of this area in Russia are being assulted and pushed out of the cities. A good idea might be to rent the movie or purchase the music on cd. I've done the play and the music is all the same from play to play so there wont be any surprises. Break a leg!

I did Fiddler on the Roof my senior year in HS. I was in the pit band. I love the songs in this musical. Why don't you rent the movie?

I just looked it up on youtube.com and there seems to be a few entries there as well.

The play is about a man who has 5 daughters. I like the first half better than the second (jovial vs. serious). It centers around the wedding of his first three daughters and how they break tradition. He is also a Russian Jew in a town where the Russians truly have control as well. Eventually, he has to leave his home because they take the town.
