My car puffed out blue smoke while driving on the motorway. the car was sitting at 70 and I was progressing up hill when i noticed it. It happened twice and so far it has not happened since. What would be the main causes of this? And how would I fix such a thing? Is it going to be costly depending on what it is?

Blue smoke is a sign of oil burning. It only happened when the engine was working really hard so you are probably starting to wear out your valve guides (it is expensive to fix this) but you do not need to fix it until you car fails a smog control test 50,000 miles or more. My truck has 200,000 and it only puffs when I first start it up.
You are ok as long as it is not constant. You should start to keep an eye out on your oil level though, never let that get too low

A little more info. How many miles on the engine, year of car. Have you ever followed your car with someone else driving so you could watch the tailpipe the whole way. Maybe your blue puffs is a steady stream of blue?

Blue smoke is from burning oil. It can be from bad piston rings or valve guide seals. First thing to do is use a a product like AMS-OIL engine & crankcase cleaner. Then do a (dry, then wet) compression check to determ if the rings are going bad. If the wet & dry compression values are close 5-10 LBS max they are OK. Replace the valve stem seals. (seals are cheep, rings are not)

Not much to go on here. I would check to be sure the transmission isn't over filled and that the car doesn't need a tune up. Good luck.
