Most doctors now recommend getting your first pap smear before becoming sexually active (when you know you're going to start having sex in the near future) or at age 21, whichever comes first. They used to recommend age 18 no matter what. It's a good idea to go to the GYN before you become sexually active to decide what the best pregnancy prevention would be best for you (pills, condoms, or whatever) and to get your inside and outside parts checked out to make sure everything is normal. Don't be scared to go, it's not so bad. Talk to the doctor before your examination to make sure you are comfortable with them. He/she should be willing to talk to you in their office or somewhere outside the exam room if it is more comfortable for you. Good luck and remember: you can never have enough lube, store bought or otherwise, make sure he is tested for STIs if he has had other partner(s) before you, and talk about what you are willing to do beforehand. Be comfortable with yourself and your body. Have fun! Relax!

Ok, you are supposed to get and annual pap smear, especially if you are sexually active but that doesn't mean you don't have to get one if you are not. At least than going into the whole sex thing you know you are clean. He should get checked out to, just to make sure you are both aware of what exactly is going on. No surprises is better than finding out later you have something that could have been prevented.

I would say that it really doesn't matter either way if you are a virgin or not. I believe after you start your cycle you should pay a visit to your gyn atleast once a year. It wouldn't hurt, weather they give you a pap or just an exam they would definately know what is the best choice.

You have waited this long to give up your virginity? I applaud that in everyway possible. Keep me applauding when you don't give it up until you are married to him. If he is the one, then marriage shouldn't be out of the question first. Its your body, and if your absolutely sure of you choice, Yes. Go get a pap smear and also consult with your gynecologist of your concerns and the decision you are about to make. This is a huge decision. This is something you can never ever take back.
P.S. If your going to go to gynecologist for you to get a pap smear. I suggest you tell your man to go get a check up himself. Fair is Fair. Sorry, if that sounds like a mood killer, but if he is that great he will have no problem doing it. Especially, if he respects you.

since you are still a virgin i would recommend that unless you want to become pregnant, go get a pap smear and get on some sort of birth control because it IS an old wives tale that you cant get pregnant the first time .... i have a nephew to dispove that one.... also use condoms because birth control is only effective to help prevent pregnancy not prevent sexually transmitted diseases. so always use condoms. please remember to use this advice.

They usually wait until you have had sex before doing a pap smear - the hymen (if you still have one) would be broken during the exam, so they usually wait until you've already broken it by sex or some other way.

Regular pelvic exams (including pap smears) are recommended when one turns eighteen or becomes sexually active, whichever comes first. So you should definetely get a pap smear soon, thought I don't think it matters if you get it before or after you have sex.

It's always wise to have a pap smear if you're going to be sexually active.

Current general guidelines recommend that women have a Pap test at least once every 3 years, beginning about 3 years after they begin to have sexual intercourse, but no later than age 21. Experts recommend waiting about 3 years after the start of sexual activity to avoid overtreatment for common, temporary abnormal changes. It is safe to wait 3 years, because cervical cancer usually develops slowly. Cervical cancer is extremely rare in women under age 25.
