It's very important for anybody to be able to express themselves and autistics are no exception. This may not be possible to do verbally for all people so it is very important to find a way to establish 2-way communication so the child can express wants, needs and ideas. If speech is not good or limited, there are other ways. PECs are one way. You can find some cheap sets on ebay or get some software that can help with his expression needs. Writing With Symbols is a good one.
Just because the child doesn't speak doesn't mean he/she is incabable of learning how to read or write (different parts of the brain are used to form speech and some autistics will always have trouble with it). Your child could be quite articulate-you just need to find a way that lets him/her express themselves.
What's important is that the child is able to communicate, not the manner in which they do it. I would try not to speak for them all of the time but take the opportunity to let the child express themself if possible. It's lots of hard work but the benefits far outweigh the costs. Best Wishes

Is the autism so severe that the child cannot speak??? To help an autism child it takes a lot of repeat actions and activities. There are some really good books out there... one written by a mother who's severely autism child could actually function... but it was hard hard work............. no, let your child speak, he needs to do it as much as possible.

only when it is absolutely nessisary. Often autistics do not cope well in a new situation so you may have to speak up for them then Like at a new doctor's office your child may withdraw and not be able to tell the doctor what is bothering them and you can do so at other time if your child is hard to understand when they talk you can then translate to whom ever they were talking to.

You know I do not think it is good, I really don't. But I do have a tendency to talk to people for my son when he is to.....well confused I guess one would call it.
As soon as he starts playing with his ears and looking at me with that panicked look like he is going to bolt (ever seen a scared horse who is going to bolt any second, this is what my son looks like) I will jump in.
My son appears so releaved.....He is not a good talker when stressed and he has gone into seizures before. What is a mother to do?
My cousin has speech problems. When we went to visit I was the only cousin who could understand him. He loved this!
