My husband always used to say this and his friend would answer "the book or the play" well I'm not sure if this is a joke or a quote or a line from a movie. Can anyone out there answer my question?

The book was written by Louisa May Alcott.

There was also a play, based on her book...the writer (the person who adapted the book for the play) was Alan Knee. Since the play was a musical, the music was by Jason Howland and the lyrics by Mimi Dickstein. I've given you the link for the musical.

There was also a movie, one made in 1933, one made in 1994 and that was adapted by Gillian Armstrong.
