Ok I've heard several times before that you can breastfeed a baby that is not yours. Is this true and safe. Example if for some reason I am not yet producing milk but another mom close to me is, is it ok for her to breastfeed my baby? Serious answers only please and also can I breastfeed while I'm pregnant?

Theres a lot to answer here....you can breastfeed your adopted child....yes, with a pump and diligence and patience...you can nurse a baby that isnt yours ...is that what you meant?
Also, yea, up until about 60 years ago 'wet nurses' were a bonafide profession, if a mom didnt want to...or couldnt nurse her own child she could hire a wet nurse to do it for her...its not like it would hurt the child.
It sounds like you are talking about a temporary situation...like, if it should happen that you arent producing enough milk, could you get a close friedn to nurse baby until you figure it out...sure...why not? But very few women really dont have ENOUGH milk ...you can take steps now to ensure your milk supply will be OK...read up on it....talk to a Lactation Consultant...find out from your insurance co. if they cover visits to an LC....
Can you breastfeed while pregnant? Yes...its called 'Tandem Nursing'

If she agrees, then it would be OK. Be sure she isn't on any medications because some cross over into breast milk. Wet nurses still exist where I live. The first 2 weeks when the milk starts to come in contains colostrum which gives the baby passive immunity. After that, it is your choice whether to choose breast milk vs formula. Breast milk is ideal. I would refrain from breast feeding when pregnant because it takes so much energy and nutrients to sustain a healthy pregnancy, to stimulate lactation at that time may not be feasible since the hormones that trigger lactation are not in play yet. Breastfeeding takes a lot of energy as well. It may be too taxing on your body to do both at the same time. You can try it but take your vitamins and eat very very well. Your caloric intake would have to be super high. have a great year and congratulations.

They say that you shouldn't breastfed after 3 months being pregnant. This is because breasfeeding causes the uterus to contract. And, the belief is that it will cause a miscarriage or early labor. So, no it's not safe. You can read both sides of the argument, but as a pregnant mom I'd error on the side of caution.

It is possible for a woman to breastfed a child that is not hers. It would be easier if she was already lactating. If not there are drugs that "can" induce lactation. There are cases where it spontaniously happens in mother's who have adopted, but it not only is uncommon but it's also known they don't produce enough milk on their own to sustain it. I've seen the feeding bags you can wear around your neck that have a little tube. You fill the bag with formula or a wet nurse's milk and the tube tapes to your breast. The baby gets the milk and stimulates you for more milk production.

Dr. Sears is a great source on this!!

I would not advise it.

FIRST) YOUR breast milk is custom made for YOUR baby...as her milk is for her baby....

SECOND) Breast milk is a bodily fluid like any other and can transmit disease like hepatitis and HIV.

THIRD) The only way to stimulate breastmilk production...is to breastfeed.

My first week breastfeeding was sheer torture. I wasn't producing enough milk (or so I thought), but the doctor assured me we were fine and to just keep at it...sure enough, my milk came in and my son is thriving...he's 3 months and easily 18 pounds! And you are perfectly safe to breastfeed the first child while pregnant with the second...although depending on the age of the child, I may consider weening the child, unless you plan on tandem nursing when #2 is born.

Long story short, YES it is possible to have a "wet nurse" feed your baby, but NO it is not "100% safe" and it only sabotages your own efforts to produce milk.

If you want milk, Buy a pump. Nurse like mad and when baby isn't nursing, use the pump regularly...in 2 to 6 weeks you'll be a regular dairy cow.

Yes It is okay for someone to breastfeed a child that is not biologically yours. There is even a way to make yourself produce milk if you are adopting, It takes several months but it is possiable. Also, if your baby is ill when born you can talk to the doctor about getting milk from a milk bank

About breastfeeding while pregnant, yes it is possiable. You may experience a slight decrease in production but you will overcome it. Also about the post that says breastfeeding is a form of birth control, it is not 100% foolproof. If you give pacifiers, supplemental bottles, or solids it is not a very good birth control method.

You can continue to breastfeed while pregnant; the milk will change back to colostrom right before the birth of the baby. There is a world of information about nursing out there. I nursed my son until he was 2 years old and I did a lot of research about nursing. I loved it and I still find the subject interesting and I enjoy encouraging other mothers to nurse for as long as they can. Good luck to you!

Yes, yes and yes. It is very difficult to stimulate and it takes a long time, but if you're serious, it can be done. If you want to try, buy yourself a medical grade electric breast pump. It does wonders on starting your milk flow. Sometimes, just putting the baby to the breast works.
(Please also note that breast milk can carry the HIV virus. This, like any other body fluid, can infect another person.)

If you are 110% sure that this other woman does not have any communicable diseases and is drug free and you are okay with it I don't see how it could hurt anything. My milk always takes 4 days to come in and during that time I end up using bottles and formula so it's possible your milk won't come in before your baby gets seriously hungry!
