Posion all of them of them I know the birds might not come but if you want to get rid of the rats or you might want to buy the stuff which you spray and the rats hate it and they ran as crazy from your place where ever you are and dont worry that stuff has been tested and its normal to other animals.

Ask your friendly (hopefully) Environmental Health Officer for some help and advice.

Walk around your home and look for points of entry into your house. A mouse can get into a hole the size of a Bic Biro lid, so a rat isn't going to need a hole much bigger than that.

Have you got a deck? They seem to love living under decks.
Is there any food for them from the rubbish bins? I see you like the birds, but the rats will eat the bird feed if they can get to it, which 9 out of 10 times they can.
Prevent ways of encouraging them.
Block and points of entry.
Clear away rubbish or debris or any removable area that they can live under.
Trap the remaining rats.
A terrier or cat are also a great help.
Keep the area around your house as clean and free from rat attractors as possible.

Hope that helps a bit.

I live in the country and I don't have rats. What do you have on your property that is attracting them? The cats are an ok idea but rats breed like crazy. Clean up the area. Do you feed the birds? If so they may be coming after the seed on the ground or the bird debris may be attracting them. You must have neighbors somewhere by you, check them out. Are they using a rubbish service or do they burn trash and leave it around? If so, call your local zoning to complain.

As a country dweller I would recommend getting a cat - just dont put down warfarin - very expensive in vet bills - I know - £650!! Used to live in Soho near Chinatown - the rats there are BIIIIIGGG!! So many more killer rats in the city than here methinks - moving to city not solution really as you are always near a rat in the city eh!! Including Human ones.

one thing i know works is to cover one of the rats with diesel. the rat then spreads this smell in all the runs and the other rats leave. i guess they don't like the smell. we have a lot of out buildings and a very lazy cat, also don't put food out for a while. i know it will seem mean but if you are feeding the birds you can guarantee you are feeding the rats as well

Adopt some outdoor cats from an animal shelter. I've had several cats over the years and they've wiped out the pests, including rats, pretty good.

i found if i use a closed container to store all unwanted food waste then the only rubbish in your garden is non edible and they get bored and go next door.
