I am absolutely positive your Mom already knows this. What might be a good idea is for you to suggest the two of you take a visit to his grave, where she may or may not share stories of her father. The most important thing is that you do not ignore this day because that is the same as saying your grandfather never existed and was never important.

best to just casually ask if she is going to vist the grave, let her take the lead after that.
