I have a 1998 VW Cabrio with low mileage (50,000), and automatic transmission.

This evening I started the car and noticed that the speedometer stopped working altogether though it had been working earlier today.

I drove home from school, about 30 minutes, and just as I was getting to my street, the check engine light came on.

All other gauges are working properly and I have not noticed anything else wrong.

From what I've been reading, I believe it is the speed sensor.

Am I correct, and could I purchase the part myself and have someone very familiar with cars install it?

If not, how much will it cost me to have repaired?

I have a year-long warranty on all electrical work because I was forced to have the electrical system re-installed thanks to the previous owners' bad aftermarket automatic starter. Would this warranty cover the work?

I appreciate the help very much. Thanks!

Your warranty probably will cover this. I think you are probably right that it is the speed sensor. It also could be the connector to the speed sensor is loose. I might get someone familiar with cars to see if the plug to the sensor is loose, but if I were you I would take it to a shop to replace the speed sensor.

if the speed sensor is bad, probably isn't covered as it's a bad part and it sounds like a bad sensor. if it is a wiring problem, would probably be covered. need to have your mechanic check it out to determine where the problem is.
