Moving for Grad school. I heard Allston has too many undergrads and other areas take too long to commute from. I want to be in an interesting place too. Any suggestions?

I want to be close to other students, just not all undergrads if I can avoid it.

I'm an undergrad, but know a lot of grad students here at BU...the majority seem to live in either Brookline or Cambridge.

Keep in mind that most of Brookline is closer to campus, but quieter and calmer than Allston (I would not recommend Allston to anybody. It's dirty, dangerous, and just unpleasant in general). You'll most likely be close to the T, which would only be a short ride, for those really cold winter days.

Cambridge is a bit more exciting than Brookline, although parts of it have a lot of students from MIT and Tufts. Harvard students pretty much all live on campus. Somerville, just north of Cambridge, tends to have cheaper rent, but beware of the T ride that can take awhile to get to the city, and Tufts students around.

If you haven't visited these neighbourhoods before, you might want to before you move here. Also, some people might prefer the South End or even South Boston, which is a bit further away (about as far as Somerville from campus) and doesn't have as many students. Rent is much better, though.

Also keep in mind that a lot of people are getting apartments for the fall now, so if you want a decent place for a decent rent, act soon.

Allston has a lot of undergrads. Not that there's anything wrong with that... Sometimes they're hilarious when they're drunk, but you do have to be careful of puke on the sidewalk on Sunday mornings, which isn't so hilarious. Brighton has some undergrads but not as many (although as you get closer to Boston College then there are more). I would say Brighton or Brookline, maybe away from Commonwealth Ave. (even if you move a couple blocks away from Comm. Ave. you'll still be near the Green Line and it will be considerably quieter). There are still quite a few bars, restaturants, and stores around there. Also Back Bay is ok too, on the other side of the B.U. campus.

The South End and Back Bay are both close to BU and interesting areas. Back Bay may be a bit more expensive. than South End. Brookline is a on the other side of Allston, towards BC...it's a bit nicer but also has a lot of students, grad and undergrad. It's hard to avoid students in Boston! Wherever you live, be sure to be close to the green line since BU's stops are along there.

Allston is a mix, but because it is cheaper, tends to be more undergrads. I would say just look anywhere in the Back Bay/Fenway areas and keep in mind that parts of Cambridge are very close and easily accessed via either car or T.

Boston is a college town so you will be surrounded by students from our many many colleges and university. Allston-Brighton is okay, Back Bay and South End and Roxbury are too expensive. Jamaica Plain might be worth looking into. Look at the towns surrounding preferable, Cambridge, Somerville, Medford and Brookline. Look into apartments around the Boston area of Fenway.

i am actually a 24 year old grad student attending boston university right now. what will you be studying?

boston is a huge college city anyway, so i'm not sure if you can "avoid" undergrads (come on, they make for some funny specticles!)

anyway, I live in medford, ma which is just right outside the city and that works perfectly for me. with no traffic it takes about 10 mins to get to BU. i would also say check into waltham, cambridge (that's a great city), brighton, even arlington (though it's very quiet).

good luck, and see you at BU.

Try brookline or maybe the brighton/allston area..all on the greenline like BU and they're like affordable and really nice places.

Include in your considerations just across the river into Cambridge.
