Well, if your friend is recently out, I'm trying to figure out what mood you want to create with the film.
If you want to cry and weep a little, then Brokeback Mountain is fantastic. However, I can't imagine you'd like to do that together. It's a sad, although powerful cinematic experience.
If you want pure, gross-out hilarious comedy, Another Gay Movie is fantastic. I watched it and was not disappointed- it's basically American Pie done in all gay splendor. A lot of fun and laughs.
If you want something that's equal mixtures romance, tough issues (like homophobia and discrimination, etc.), lighter moments, and all that- you can try the others. Latter Days is heavier, but ultimately very rewarding. Big Eden and Adam and Steve are both nicer, fluffier films.
My vote is for Another Gay Movie, but use your best judgement.
Happy movie night!

Big Eden: haven't seen it.
Another Gay Movie: Hysterically funny, but you need to know something of the gay community and gay history to get a lot of the humor. Not a good choice for Mr. New Gay.
Adam & Steve: Maudlin, with too many contrived coincidences.
Brokeback Mountain: Beautiful film, but the relationship is somewhat violent at the beginning, and the ending is so sad.
My vote: Latter Days. Lovely film, with wonderful messages of hope combined with isolation and heartache.

Big Eden by far. It's a love story. The interesting thing is the people of Big Eden don't care if you're gay or straight, as long as you're happy. It's also a fantasy about the way the world should be.
You might also like Trick, another love story.
Latter Days is an excellent movie.
Another Gay Movie is hilarious.
Adam & Steve is OK.
Brokeback Mountain is a gorgeous movie, but somewhat of a downer.

Although I hated the movie, "Brokeback Mountain" is superior regarding cinematography.
As your friend is recently out, "Another Gay Movie" might have parts that go over his head.
"Big Eden" and "Latter Days" would be my suggestions. Either, or.

I've only seen Latter Days and Brokeback Mountain... Brokeback is good if you're in the mood to be depressed/cry. Latter Days... just makes me happy. =)

My vote is for Latter Days. Heart felt story about a closeted gay youth finding love where he would least expect to find it

Latter Days. By far. A mix of making fun of the stereotypes, facing serious issues, and it pulls a twist that no one sees coming. GREAT movie.

as far as filmmaking quality goes, brokeback mountain is the only one that isn't a waste of celluloid. but it's not the most lighthearted movie. the only other one i've seen was latter days. it was really bad and really depressing but also cute and it had a happy ending. congrats to your friend.

None of the mentioned films,
The best film for someone coming out is called "Broken Hearts Club" staring Dean Cain.
Believe me it is a excellent flick and will help your mate understand a lot....â¥
