I have yellow african cichlid that I want to put into a 39 gallon tank with two convicts(male & female). They are all pretty young, can they mix or will they always fight?

Eh, not really... they would probably get along, but they have different requirements. Convicts are central Americans ; they like soft water and a low pH. Your yellow cichlid (probably a yellow lab) is an African cichlid that likes hard water and a high pH.
Also, those yellow guys grow to 4-6", so it might be a tight squeeze with a pair of convicts - convicts can be mean SOBs, more so when they're spawning, and the yellow just may not have enough room to have his own territory.

which could be very volatile in case you convict make certain to spawn you African might actually die in case you have a small aquarium alongside with the different convicts that at the instant are not spawning. additionally Convict are from South u.s. and require different water situations than African cichlids do. So it incredibly does not artwork out. except all you convict are the same gender.

Not wise to mix convicts with african cichlids is a small tank such as a 39gal, especially if your yellow african turns out to be a male kenyi and your convicts turn out to be a breeding pair.

I have done it before I knew any better, it worked great the first time.

I don't reccomend it though. I think Zoe's answer is excellent.

And watch those convicts, they breed like rabbits!

I would rearrange the rocks and the plants in the tank so that they all have to establish new territories.they will be less likely to fight

Yes but make sure you have plenty of hiding places.
Cichlids can be very territorial and unpredictable.
