Wegener used similar fossils in Africa and South America as part of the argument for his theory of continental drift - that the continents were connected millions of years ago but then moved apart. Later we found out that his theory had some errors, but it was corrected and now we call it Tectonic Plates. there is a LOT of info about this on line.

"Continental Drift" there was once just one continent surrounded by ocean, then the tectonic plates started to move and the land overlying them moved with them, you can still see where south america fit into africa.
The drift is still occuring the Americas are moving away from Europe and Africa by about an inch a year.

Ummm, i think it was because he said that the continents were once united in one super continent (Pangea), that is why some fossils exist on different continents.
