Timing belt broke. I was told that, if this happens it will bend valves, anyone know if this is true and if you have had to do this, how much

these engines are interference engines. when the engine goes out of time by the belt breaking, there in no clearance in the engine between the pistons and valves when the piston is all the way up and the valves are open. if you were driving the car when it happened, good chance there is damage. if you have an automatic transmission, take a shot and replace the belt as the wheels don't drive the engine when the belt breaks. if you have a manual trans, when the belt breaks and the car is being driven, the wheels will continue to move the pistons up and down. so, if you have an automatic, take a shot. if you have a manual, plan on junking the car.

It can bend valves or punch a hole through the piston. It depends on the motor clearances and rpm when break occurs. Cost will depend on damage done.
