If you buy a computer with a wireless connection, you can take advantage of free WiFi hotspots (connection points) all over the place. In metropolitan areas, you'd be surprised how many coffee shops and stores have free internet, and many libraries have wireless as well. Just be careful of security- they are not the most protected connections. Look up "Wireless security" in Yahoo to learn ways to make your free connections as safe as possible.

If you need to find wireless connect points in a particular area, there are quite a few sites that have lists. Just look up "free hotspot" in Yahoo. Some sites show one state or city, others cover the whole US or larger areas.

Also, most hotels offer internet connectivity, sometimes free, sometimes for a fee.

If you want internet that is completely independent, get a cell phone with data capability (specifically for connecting to laptops, not just in the phone), and sign up for a data plan with your cell phone provider. Depending on how much you use the connection, this can cost from about $10 up to about $90. Be careful to get the right plan- overage is _expensive_!

you can buy something called a "wireless internet card" for a laptop that attaches to the side of your laptop that will give you a wireless internet connection. It is better is you buy one from a cell phone company this way you will always have an internet connection whereever you have cell phone signal and you wont be illegally sharing other peoples wireless internet connection. This will cost from about $15 - $50, if you buy it from a cell phone company they will charge you monthly or by minutes of use.

I was misled by a major computer company when buying my laptop. I was told that if I buy their wireless router that I could get the signal from anywhere. Obviously not.

There are places called Hot Spots in certain cities such as hotels, big businesses, etc. I was told that you could feed off of their signal but only if you're in a certain range.

That's all I know. Hopefully you'll get some good answers because I sure would like to know. It's the only reason why I bought my laptop and now it's useless to me.

Heres how I do it, if you have a cingular phone such as a SLVR or a RAVR these phones have a capabilty to do a type of phone call the will make it so you are using minutes on your cell phone for every minute of internet time.

www.cingular.com <----you will probaly beable to find out how to do this or go to a store and ask. They will want you to sign up for a plan that says that you will be charged like.... 50 cents per minute on the internet.

what i usually do is see if there is a wireless connection around,if not i use my cell phone.i just plug it into the USB port, and go.its slow because its a dial connection, but its better than nothing.you have to install the driver for the phone.manually,or with the USB CONNECTION SOFTWARE.If You dont have the software and you create a new connection you will have to enter the phone number for your phone to dial out for internet access -for example:when i create a connection it ask me for the number to dial ,and i enter(*99***3#).
