what types of stimuli can cause the gates on ion channels to open or close?

anyone who gets this biology paper can agree w/ me that these are hard and annoying to do. please anyone, i need your help thanks

Are you talking about nerve cells? Pressure, heat, cold. Those would be sensory nerves, mind you.

An example of a stimulus is an odour that reacts with the receptor on a G-protein in the membrane causing production of cyclic-AMP which in turn opens up a sodium ion channel causing positively charged sodium to flood into the cell, altering the electrochemical gradient of the membrane and inducing an action potential.
