You can do this several ways. First, make sure to make a backup of anything you may possibly need, IP addresses, E-mail settings, Music, Data, etc. either use the windows backup utility, or something like NERO or Roxio. or you can make it easy, and just burn a copy of your hard drive to disc. just in case.

secondly, make sure you have any and all software media that you plan on re-installing, or your upgrade CD/DVD's on hand and with you.

Then, you want to have either a blank CD or Floppy, just in case a program wants a boot disk.

You can use the windows format utility by either booting into dos from a startup CD, or using your Windows Setup CD. If you're just doing a clean install, you can do this when you install windows. it's clean and pain free. takes anywhere from 15 minutes to over two hours, depending on the size of your hard drive.

Next, you'll want to install whatever version of windows or linux you plan to install. if it's winxp, make sure you install service pack 2 before you go any further.

after service pack two is installed, you can either run all the updates (which takes about an hour or so on a highspeed connection, or forever and a half over dialup) or start installing applications and restoring data.

Make sure you have all the updated software first. Then the first application you'll want to install would be your antivirus software. secondly would be any major applications, and finally, you can restore your data.

have fun!

Hi. First back up everything you want to keep. Go to the command prompt and type "Format C:" if you want C to be formatted. Make sure you have the installation dick FIRST.
