Direct characterization is something said or done directly by the character, or said by other characters, which explicitly reveals something about them. Some direct characterization is also done by narrative, but this should be kept to a minimum.
Indirect characterization is actions, or the reactions of other characters, which reveals something about the character without saying it in so many words. An example is Scrooge using only a single small candle and having a very small supper - these indicate that he is miserly without anyone having to say so.

Direct characterization is whenever they tell you something, like: Shelley has red eyes, she's nice, she's Canadian. Indirect characterization is whenever they don't tell you something, but you learn something from what they told you, like: Me: Shelley told me yesterday that you killed someone, is this true, Albert? Albert: No (&He's telling the truth) So you conclude shelley's a liar.
