Patriotism encourages blind faith in the country the patriot lives in, weather UK, USA, or Afghanistan. Think before answering.

Patriotism was invented to get you to put on a uniform, learn how to use an automatic weapon and go kill who ever it is that your government wants you to.

You don't want to kill then hell boy you don't love your country.

Tell me how many world leaders do you see in flak jackets sitting in a fox hole, taking incoming fire. None. They want shock and awe, well why don't they go over an experience it.

I quite like the way America is patriotic, here in England you'd be lucky to find someone who even knows the national anthem (well I know its got something to do with god save the queen but I get it mixed up with that navy one and the one you sing for new year? Ok, I just haven't a clue!) Well yeah I do think you need to like the country at least a little bit, and stay loyal to it instead of all the foreign people coming here and the natives moving out!

I really cant speak to the UK's situation, but as to the US, it appears that we (the US) are clearly past the zenith of the life cycle of this nation. I imagine that things like greed, lust for power, corruption.... on and on... are the operative forces at work. None the less this isn't going to be an easy ride. As to weather... climatologists have said that weather on earth over the last few centuries has been more mild and settled than is typical for this planet and that we may expect a swing back toward what is more normal. So no, it appears as far as weather is concerned, a bit more wild is...well this is normal.

Patriotism is in itself useful in holding onto a countries heritage and good graces, and will always stand to remind us what is great about each individual nation. But it's also a foundation for conflict. In order to advance and evolve we need to get past the blind patriotism that so many people feel, in particular Americans. We all like to be proud of our achievements and the achievements of our brothers and sisters, but until we realise we are all human beings, and all of the same basic design, then we will have to accept things like war, poverty, greed etc. As they are all rolled into the same recipe.

Patriotism has come to mean the same thing as rooting for your favorite football team. It is all about competition. We don't need it any more.

I think we need to stop thinking of ourselves as belonging to one group or another and realize we're all on the same team.

It is a global society now and we are all humans living on a very fragile planet. We all have families and go to work, watch TV and fix supper. We are different colors, but that is only skin deep. It's silly to think in terms of my country is better than your country--unless it's the World Cup.

Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel.

For instance, some of these redneck, christian fundamentalists from the USA. The ones who voted for bush.

If they had been born in Afghanistan, they'd be red hot islamic Taliban supporters and Mujahedin. Thus illustrating the idiocy of patriotism. . It is purely an accident of birth.

I mean, it is not as if people are approached before they are born , and asked what nationality they'd like to be. So when someone says they are proud to be American, it's not like they CHOSE to be American, is it?

Boswell tells us that Samuel Johnson made this famous pronouncement that patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel on the evening of April 7, 1775. He doesn't provide any context for how the remark arose, so we don't really know for sure what was on Johnson's mind at the time. Still I'm sure he's right!

Patriotism is good. The trouble is that there is a massive......and i mean MASSIVE PR campaign to confuse patiotism with racism.
This is especially the case in Britain; go to any other country and you will see their national flag flying down most streets, not so in Britain.

*This is a design to destroy patriotic feelings in Britain in order for a future European integration. Keep your national pride because going down the route of a one world government is FAR more damaging.

Patriotism should not encourage blind faith. A true patriot believes in what is good for his country, instead of believing whatever the leader of the country says is good for the country(which is often what is truly good for the leader.)

Most people in the world are probably patriotic about their home country,so in that respect I don't think that it is a bad thing. It is when it is taken to the extreme that it could become a problem.I think in today's society a lot of people are feeling that their rights and core values are being diminished due to the problems that stem from multiculturalism.
