The temperture got down to like -2 degrees and my batter voltage went down to basicly 2. But what I'm not sure of is I took the battery off and hooked up a resistance meter to the + and - terminals and I am showing 1.0 of resistance is this normal? I don't know much about car electrical systems but seems strange or is this normal for a jeep? What could have caused the battery to die, cold or bad alternator? I took the battery out and put it inside and it's gone up from 2.0 to 8.0, did the fluid inside freeze?

1 ohm of resistance is almost a dead short. That would be the equivalent of having both high beams on. The fact that the battery recovered a little when you disconnected it is proof that something is seriously draining it. You can leave the meter on the battery cables while you look for what it is. When you pull the right fuse or disconnect the right device or turn off the headlights, the reading will go way up.

1 ohm resistance is normal for battery cables. It is possible that the battery froze and ruined it.Have it checked at an auto parts store to see if it is still good.Once you have a good battery installed, with the engine running check the voltage at the battery.Should be13.5-15.5 volts. If alternator has a blown diode it will not charge correctly and drain the battery when not in use.I believe the -2 degree temp could have damaged the battery. If you have a clock on all of the time that can drain a battery over a 2 to 3 week period.

That battery is hooped. It froze. The reason why it froze is because it didn't have much of a charge anymore. It would have died on you very soon anyways. Reason - either faulty battery or altenator is not putting out. Have the altenator checked. You have to buy another battery.
A fully charged battery has mainly battery acid(which don't freeze) As you wear the battery down without recharging, the acid changes to water - water freezes. The altenators job is to keep the battery fully charged.
and that is how it works.

A dead battery will freeze, if the battery is bulged or frosted over it probably needs to be replaced. When purchasing a new battery ask if it's fully charged, most batteries are shipped not fully charged, you may have to have it charged for you before you install it. Also most places can load test your old battery before selling you a new one.
