My eldest brother told me that some kid said I was creepy and emo. I am a naturally shy and quiet person but very loud with close friends. And I am considered more emo because I once wore a black choker with a little skull and everyone kept saying "DID YOU PARENTS PUT THAT ON YOU?" and "WHY ARE YOU WEARING A SHOCK COLLAR?!" but I can't understand why people have to be so closed-minded when it comes to something that is different from their tastes.

The most useful concept for thinking about this is a thing called a "paradigm". From Dictionary.com:

A set of assumptions, concepts, values, and practices that constitutes a way of viewing reality for the community that shares them, especially in an intellectual discipline.

Most people learn their worldview by looking at the majority of the people around them. People, especially kids, are very sensitive to things that don't fit their paradigm- things that don't "fit in". If they haven't been taught how to deal with new and unusual things, people tend to reject them as "bad" or "weird", and will work, intentionally or not, to bring them into line with how they think reality works. In school, this is where the "why the heck are you wearing _that_?" comes from. You're doing something that doesn't make sense in their worldview, and they haven't been taught how to deal with that.

Unfortunately, a lot of people never do learn to deal with new and unusual things, and anything they didn't encounter before they were about ten will be strange forever. However, there are also a lot of people who specifically learned to like new and unusual things, and they tend to be more interesting anyway.

So, don't worry about the people who don't see why you wouldn't want to dress like everyone else. Look for people who like new and interesting things, or who just do their own thing, and you'll find plenty of people who will like your style or at least not bug you about it. (It gets better when you're older and you can actually decide where you want to go to meet people, rather than having your social group set by your school.)

I have the same pronlem, cuz people think i act white (no offence though) because i love punk rock all that good stuff, and i dress appropiatly and talk correctly. Naturally, i mix cultures and styles to create what is now me. I was born in a city of many cultures and diversities but they make fun of me because 25% of my firends were asian, 25% were white 25% were lation/ filipino, pacific islander etc, and 25% black. You cant be born in new york and not be unique. its impossible! But back to the point, they are just jealous because they are not unique and different. I say keep being you cuz you know what, I got a skull choker too! If they wanna be closed minded, they aarent going to go anywhere in life because not everyone is going to agree with them. thats how closed minded they are. Simply put, the cant accept new styles, and wont toss out old info.

Unfortunately, many people live in a very small world of their own and anything that is different than what they are used to scares them and makes them uncomfortable. I actually feel sorry for those people because they are missing out on so much creativity and interesting things and ideas. Knowing that people are like that should help you just ignore any comments or looks you get from them.Be polite and be yourself.Creative people are always a little different in a good, interesting way. Don't be afraid to express yourself just because some people don't get it.

Some people fear what they don't know, and think everyone's the same.

A lot of people are lazy and narrowminded, they dont' like to think that there is more to life, than what they see.

They dont like to see people who have different tastes than them, because that would prove that everyone's really not the same in life, and some people actually do have different talents and abliities, so they attribute it to your parents, because they dont know what else to say.

Also you didn't state how old you are, but when your under 21, people are more brainwashed, and can't think for themselves, so likely this kid is getting this attitude from somewhere else like his parents.

Some people just think that THEIR way is the ONLY way. That they are right, and everybody else on earth is wrong. This goes for everything in life:

attire
religion (or lack of)
politics
sexual orientation
food to eat
standard of living
the "right" friends
the "right" neighborhood

and so forth. Pity, isn't it.

It's human nature. They pick on those that are different so they themselves feel like they fit in.
Stupid reasoning, isn't it?
