i found this order here:

"Original Series by Frank Herbert:

1 Dune
2 Dune Messiah
3 Children of Dune
4 God Emperor of Dune
5 Heretics of Dune
6 Chapterhouse: Dune

Prelude To Dune Series by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson

1 House Atreides
2 House Harkonnen
3 House Corrino

Legends Of Dune Series by Brain Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson

1 The Butlerian Jihad
2 The Machine Crusade
3 The Battle of Corrin

"Dune 7" by Frank Herbert, Brian Herbert, and Kevin J. Anderson

1. HUNTERS OF DUNE (Aug 2006)
2. SANDWORMS OF DUNE (Sept 2007)"

but should i read the prelude before the original series?

hi, let's start with the order of the books.
Prelude to dune series: Dune:House Atradies.
Dune: House Harkonnen
Dune: House Corrino

Ledgens of Dune series:The Butlerian Jihad.
The Machine Crusade.
The Battle of Corrino.
The Classic Dune series: Dune.
Dune Messiah.
Children of Dune.
God Emperor of Dune.
Heretic of Dune.
Chapter House : Dune
you can read in chonological order, or like me start with Dune classics followed by the perlude and then ledgens to fill in the gaps. but if like me you can keep track of the various characters and plot then just read in any order that you fancy.
Happy reading!!

God bless.

The books follow the course of history over thousands of years so in my opinion it would be best to start with Dune, Dune Messiah, then children of Dune and god emperor of dune. There then follows Heretics of Dune and Chapter House Dune. you could then have ago at the ones written by his son, Brian Herbert. He has written 3 books that are prior to Herbert seniors ie, House Atredies, House Harkonnen and House Corrino. And another book that continues the story from where his father left off but i can't remember the name of that one.

The "Dune" trilogy went this way.....1)"Dune", 2)"Dune Messiah", 3)"Children of Dune". I believe that "God Emperor of Dune", came at a later time.
