I have a 93 Cherokee Sport, 6cyl. with 190,000 miles on it. The other day was really cold and I was driving the Jeep on and off all day. It was working fine until the nighttime when all of a sudden it just died completely. When I turned the key right after it died, it just clicked a few times. The next day it started up fine and I drove it for a few minutes and everything was okay (it was warmer that day, too, if that matters). Today (very cold again) it started up fine, and after it was warmed up, I started to drive - I made it, like, three blocks before it totally died again. Is it the alternator?

Also, I have no idea if this has anything to do with it, but the lock/latch on my glove compartment was very stuck for a while and my boyfriend got it open by prying the off the whole latch mechanism. (this is recently) Do you think, consequently, that the glove compartment light is on all the time? (Just thought I'd throw that out there)

I agree with slp.My 94 Cherokee was acting the same way,had to change the crank sensor. From what I hear,it is a common problem with Jeeps.

If you suspect the light in the glovebox is on all the time... take the bulb out and try again.
There should be a battery or alternator indicator light on the dash... if the light comes on; you have a charging circuit fault...if there isn't then there's a gauge that shows charging... a car should charge at 14+ volts to maintain 12 volt service...
If the indications from a gauge (or the absence of a light) states there is no alternator problem, you need to look somewhere else.
Sometimes a fuel pump dying will react in a similar manner.

The light is on probally but that is a different problem.Your problem sounds to me it is called The crankshaft sensor I hav a 1987 wagoneer and that is the same problems I had over the summer and I found out what the problem was a guy I worked with had a jeep and he described the same think to me when I was having problems with mine it is a jeep problem when the sensors get hot it shuts the engine off or it also could be a sensor for your electric fan put on your defrost and if the fan comes on its the fan relay sensor check these things out

You need to get a voltmeter and keep track of the battery voltage. It should be around 14 volts when the engine is running. If it's under 13 and slowly dropping, the alternator isn't working.
If you suspect the glove box light just disconnect it.
And if Bullwinkle can't fix what he breaks, don't let him near your car with a screwdriver anymore.

If it wast your alternator once it died it would stay dead. Take your battery in to a store (Krage, AutoZone, etc) and ask them to test it (this can take up to an hour) You probably have a shorted cell in your battery.
If the battery is ok then you need to see if you are getting spark to the cylinders, plull off one of the wires from the spark plug (hold it with insulated pliers) and hold it near a ground (any metal body part, and see if it sparks - no spark bad ignition - get spark bad fuel system (fuel filter clogged, bad fuel pump, many other things) get a book at the auto store and it will take you step by step in how to diagnose the car. Try removing the battery connections cleaning them and put them back on. Also the connections where the battery cables connect to the engine and ground.

Your alternator is maybe dead or weak so go to a Jeep Repair Cener and tell them about it.
