I would agree with the general diagnosis of black spot disease, but that's most likely not really what you have. True black spot is rather uncommon in aquariums and very, very rare in tanks that have had no new fish added recently. If you have not had new fish added in the last 6-9 days, you don't have true Black Spot Disease, which required exposure to birds to complete it's life cycle.

What you most likely have is one of several other parasites all of which can cause black spots on the fishes skin, fins and scales. With out a sample and a good lab it's impossible to know which one it might be, but luckily it doesn't really matter as you treat them all the same way. Go to a good pet shop and get some parasite medicine. Use as directed on the box for the required length of time. If after a few days you don't see an improvement, go back to the store and get fluke medicine. Between the two it will get rid of your parasite problem.

Be sure to remove the carbon from your filter before treatig the tank and also do a large (50 - 60%) water change before starting the treatment. When you do the water change be sure to clean the gravel very well as many parasites for cysts that stay in the gravel before hatching.

Best of luck clearing it up

That happened to one of my goldfish that I won at the fair (everyone said they would die since they are fair fish) but I had him and the other one in a small tank like a 2 gallon tank and it always seemed dirty no matter how many times I cleaned it, I then moved them to a 5 gallon tank which stayed cleaner and the black spots went away. Trying moving him to a bigger tank or clean the tank you have or get a good filter. Good luck.

If it is along the fin edges, just healing from ammonia burns and you need to test your water. If it is all over patches it could be black spot, look black spot up on yahoo.

do the black spots look like they are patterned? he could be regaining his black pigmentation -- goldfish change color frequently and black is one of the colors they will change to and from.

I would isolate him and give a treatment to him for external parasites.
