At this age always take your baby to a doctor or pediatrician for things like this. It could be a flu, bronchitis, pneumonia, RSV (which can be very serious), and you should get a doctors opinion instead of trying to treat at home and hope for the best. RSV especially can turn nasty very quickly which is why you should seek medical care for congestion when you notice it.

I would definitely take him to the doctor- you may not get anything but peace of mind but it's better then taking the risk of guessing. I have the same problem right now with my 7 month old and I suck out her nose at least 4 times a night. I don't use the saline (mostly because I can't get the store bought kind and I don't own things to measure the salt- no teaspoons in China) but I do use the humidifier and take her into a steamy bathroom as much as possible. I just asked about vick and was told to put baby Vick's or adult Vick's on the outside of her clothes. Good luck with your little one...hope he feels better.

Get a cool mist humidifier, they sell them cheap at walmart, run it near the baby. Keep the baby upright whenever possible-use a bouncy chair, prop him/her up on your lap, if all else fails some babies love the carseat! Get some saline drops, squirt them up the nose, and then use the booger sucker. Don't overdo the booger sucker-that can irritate the lining of the nose and make it worse. Vicks has some baby rub too, if the baby has sensitive skin you can put a little on the clothing. Run hot water in the tub, close the doors and make it steamy in the room. Hang it with the baby in the bathroom for awhile, this well help too! If your baby gets a chapped nose, rub some lanisoh on it to help. Good luck!

In the bathroom, close the door, and turn on the hot water, make it as steamy as possible. stay in there about 15 -20 minutes.
What also works is to bring the baby outside for a few minutes on a cold evening - not the same one as the steam - cold air can sometimes move things along.
Before you give a 4 month old any medicines, check with the pediatricians office.

You cannot give a baby younger than 6 months anything without checking with your doctor.
Try taking your baby in the bathroom and turning the shower on really hot so it gets very steamy - this should help. You can also create a steam tent by placing a sheet over a humidifier and whatever the baby is in - swing, crib, whatever. Just make sure that hte baby doesn't get to hot. Also, elevate the baby's head so s/he is not lying flat.

Do you have a humidifier? If you do, then keep your baby close to it. Also you can turn on the shower as hot as it goes and sit in the bathroom with the baby for about ten minutes at a time. Probably easier when the baby is sleeping.

Vicks vapo rub and a steamy bathroom. Other than that I don't think you can give a baby that young anything.
Honestly I didn't know they made a baby vicks, thats great! I always just used the regular vicks for my son, without problems. I think he was 3 months when he got his first cold.

Talk to a Pharmacist!
That is all they do, they are free, and are generally more knowledgeable than most doctors.
Otherwise use steam/humidity and positioning.
And before someone says it, NO VICKS VAPORUB. They make an infant one you can use, but you can't use the adult.
