It's true that many Hollywood actresses don't have a formal education but then again most of the actors in Hollywood today are there because a relative is already in the biz. If acting is really you're desired trade than you should get formal training and a four year college would be the best route to go. It will give you a strong foundation so that you can explore other avenues in the industry until you land that big part. Listen to your mother, she's steering you in the right direction.
