Which Metro is better?
I vote New York;
Less Smog
Lighter Traffic, even though Long Island has suburbs spanning 80 miles away, and over 2 times the population of L.A. The reason is that most people in the suburbs work within the Suburbs, New York City's main CBD, spans across a large Island. There is also a second CBD, Downtown Brooklyn. The main reason why NY has better traffic is due to it's railroad system.
New York isn't nearly as polluted as L.A
New York has 3 major skylines, and two across the River, Hackensack and New Jersey.
More Jobs, unfortunately due to L.A. close proximaty to the border, illegal imminigrants took a lot of jobs.
New York actually has 4 distinct Seasons.
More things to do like better entertainment, nightlives, shopping choices.
Not as much stuck up people as L.A., if by any chance you like to be around stuck up people, you can go out a few miles east, to the Hamptons.
New York's Beaches are good, but not as good as L.A.

The crime rate is actually going down in New York, except for 2001, with 9/11. But we still have our fair shair of gang violence, we are a city!
A house in COMPTON can reach $600,000, or $2100 a month, in L.A, for a 3 br home, while a 3 br apartment in the Bronx averages around $900 a month.
NY is more diverse, Has high Black, Italian, dutch, you name it, it has more Jamaicans than Jamaica, more Jewish people than Jerusalem.

L.A. has a high suicide rate, especially in the hills, if your not hot or pretty enough you'll probably get bullied at school.
The schools, don't even get me started, 40 kids per class room in lower income areas, they converted a prison into a school, in one case. A lot of schools, have nursery's.

NEW YORK! I'm from the South (Virginia to be exact) and I have spent vacations in both NY City and L.A. New York is MUCH better than the so-called "City of Angels." I have no desire to go back to L.A., but I can't wait to travel back to the Big Apple!

See a movie star; drink a beverage on a rooftop club at sunset; wear a couple of designer sneakers in a ultra-luxurious store in Beverly Hills; enjoy at Universal Studios Hollywood theme park, examine world-class museums, or party the night out in a starlet-filled club…..this are only someof the things you will dsicover in Los Angeles, discover this town with hotelbye . Los Angeles could be the California's liveliest city; may be the activity capital of America, with megastar electricity and unlimited activities. Hollywood is the most-see attractions in Los Angeles. That place attracts millions of readers annually who travel there to cover homage for their beloved stars and maybe even find a glimpse of a few famous personalities. And sometimes they are happy!

Well I've never been to NYC but I was born in L.A. and this the best way I can break it down.
NYC's Population is over 8 million people its the Second largest city in North America behind Mexico City
LA's Population is about 4 million HUGE difference huh? Los Angeles takes the title as the 3rd largest city in North America.
NYC and L.A. both have very huge strengths in business, media, fashion, education but NYC is just a bit bigger then L.A. which explains the huge population difference. L.A. bills itself as The Entertainment Capital of The World although Las Vegas claims it too but its a big different Entertainment Las Vegas is known for its Casino's (The Strip) aka Las Vegas Blvd South and also Downtown Las Vegas ( Fremont St). But of course we're not talking about Sin City lol. Anyways Los Angeles is really HUGE for the Film Industry (Hollywood) the LA Metropolitan area has 6 of the worlds largest major film studios and it also has the largest Film Studio in the world Walt Disney Studios founded October 16, 1923 in Los Angeles but headquarters are in the city's suburb Burbank, CA. NYC is very big on film as well but what most people don't realize movies that are filmed in NYC are made by film studios in Los Angeles. NYC is a very popular place for filming because it stands more then L.A. because NYC has a very large skyline just like Chicago.
Transportation: NYC has the largest transportation network in the world don't get me wrong Los Angeles does to but NYC is enormous people in NYC can get around because Buses, Taxi, Subway System. So in New York City you really won't need a drivers license. Now in California you need a drivers license because L.A. subway system doesn't go through out the city like NYC does, L.A. subway system is mainly legit in the downtown area. Now LA's rail system is huge when it comes down to the Metro Rail System gives you easy access to the city's suburbs Long Beach, Hollywood, Santa Monica all of West Los Angeles, Beverly Hills, even into Orange County which borders Los Angeles County Compton, Gardena you name it. But still doesn't make a change cuhz one thing I will admit The City of Angels has a terrible transportation system we still have traffic on the freeways everyday especially the 405 oh man that is the busiest freeway in the U.S. despite its not that long begins in North Western Los Angeles in the San Fernando Valley and ends in Orange County I believe in Irvine. on top of that L.A. cannot beat NYC transportation.
Seasons NYC has four distinct season Winters can be very brutal in NYC with some bad Winter Weather.
Now if your a sunny person So Cal is your destination L.A. basically has 2 season Winters are generally mild here with temps still in the 80's still a nice day for the beach eh. Summer is when quite hefty to me sometimes L.A. can go over 100 degrees in the summer but generally stays in 90's all day and drops to the 70's at night time. Now I currently live in Phoenix ever since spring began we have been over 90 degrees already.
Geography not much to speak about on NYC the city is flat with numerous skylines after skyline. Los Angeles on the other hand beats NYC def because if your an outdoor you should be in L.A. not New York. Los Angeles is both flat and hilly giving the city some amazing hiking trails you can even hike all the way to the Hollywood sign pretty dope to me. Muholland Drive. Bel Air. all these hiking trails in The City of Los Angeles

I have to second the person who said "Chicago". Chicago is a truly beautiful city. Both New York and Los Angeles fail to make the most of what could be gorgeous settings.
That said, there are things I like about both New York and Los Angeles. If I had to vote, though, I'd pick L.A. I find it fascinating that you think New York is more diverse than Los Angeles. Outside of Queens, New York comes across (at least to a visitor) as a very black and white city. L.A., with its huge numbers of Hispanics and Asians really does seem to have the whole world in one place.
I also like the architecture in Los Angeles better than that of New York. New York is a city of gray boxes, and its skyscrapers hide each other and create dark canyons downtown. The architecture in L.A. is much more vibrant and colorful, and you can notice the individual skyscrapers (which DO exist--in fact it's lower buildings that are more of a problem in earthquakes).
Both cities have outstanding entertainment and shopping options, though what they are differs in the two places. Both also have a lot of stuck-up people, plus a large majority of people who are very friendly.
You are definitely correct that New York is less polluted than Los Angeles and that it has better rail transportation (though L.A. is improving a lot in that regard). I'd also give New York the edge in beaches. Rockaway is an awesome beach right in the city, and the beaches on Long Island and the Jersey Shore are at least as good as anything in California. I also personally prefer seasons (another advantage of Chicago over either of the cities you mention), but others like generally good weather.
L.A. does have earthquakes (tsunamis really aren't a great problem in the city itself, which is mostly well inland). New York, however, was named by the Weather Channel as the potential site of the greatest weather disaster America could face, a hurricane that would make Katrina seem tame. Its low-lying position also makes it more vulnerable than L.A. to rising sea levels from global warming.
Then there's the matter of expense. You compare housing costs in bad neighborhoods--strange to begin with; it would seem middle class would be a better comparison. You also compare unlike homes. While its residents are poorer, Compton looks much more like Queens or Staten Island than the Bronx. The Bronx is mostly rowhouses and apartment buildings, while Compton is single-family homes with yards. The Bronx is more like east Hollywood, which would be a cheaper place to live than Compton. Having been to both cities, to me L.A. seemed a much cheaper place to visit than New York. The fact that the buses and subways cost $2 a ride in New York with $7 day passes, while it's $1.25 a ride in L.A. with $3 day passes gives you some idea of comparative costs.
Again, I really like both cities. If I had to choose one to live in, though, I'd pick L.A.

Real objective way to ask a question! You obviously know the answer you are looking for considering the additonal details you added. The two cities are very different and it all depends on what you like.
NY is just as polluted as LA, just not the air. You telling me that there isn't that much pollution with New Jersey less than a mile away? NJ has the most toxic sites in america. Go and swim in the husdon or east river and tell me it's not polluted. CA has the nation's strictest environmental laws in the nation, not NY.
LA has a lot more than 3 skylines too; downtownn, Century City, Mid Wilshire, Glendale, Irvine, Newport Beach, Anaheim and the Platinum triangle.
Not everyone likes seasons; they're overrated anyways.
LA has plenty of good jobs; illegals take the min wage jobs so unless that's what your after illegal immigrants aren't huting your chances.
LA has just as many things to do as NY, it is the entertainment capital of the world.
Not everyone in LA is stuck up either, it depends on what type of people you hang out with. Hollywood/entertainment types tend to have that stuck up, snobbyness. Plenty of stuck up people no matter where you go, are people on Park Ave really down to earth??
Also it seems that a lot more people from New York move out to Southern CA than the other way around. So I can't imagine it's that great when you have tons of people from the area moving here. I''ve met tons of New Yorkers and people from New Jersey in SoCal. And NJ is New York just like Orange County is LA. Yes it's expensive here, but for a reason, people want to live here. Obviously demand for housing in NY isn't as great b/c it's not as desirable.
Also I don't know where you get your facts from but some of them are just wrong. LA does not have the highest suicide rate and that BS you said about being pretty and living in the hills; why don't you actually come to LA and see what it's like rather than getting some stupid stereotypes from lame a*s TV shows like The Hills or 90210, that crap is fake.
LA does not have a limit on high rises b/c they can be constructed safety. Tokyo has a much higher earthquake risk than LA and look at all of its skyscrapers.
You mention MTV, CNN, and Fox. But all the major television and movie studios are in LA and CNN is based in Atlanta, not NY.
Universal Studios, Warner Brothers studios, Paramount Pictures studios, and pretty much every major movie company has offices in LA.
NY has bizzards which are natural disasters b/c people die in them and they declare a state of emergency. And maybe you weren't aware but NY does have a slight risk of earthquakes. Not strong ones, but a 5.0 quake will do 20x as much damage as it would in LA.
You talk about LA being doomed for economic disaster b/c of earthquakes, but wasn't it NY that experianced an economic downturn after 9/11. LA isn't nearly as big of a terrorist target as NY, so what's better a natural or man made disaster?
It all depends what you like as I said before. If you like the dense, urban, fast pace NY lifestyle then of course you'll like it more. If you want to the more laid back, outdoors lifestyle of LA then it's a better fit for you. Both cities have tons of stuff to offer people. It all depends on what you are looking for.

I can't stand LA but better things about LA are:
1. The weather. Don't have nasty winter to put up with, nor hot humid summers. Generally pleasant year around. Lot more sun in LA than NYC.
2. More variety in scenery. It has hills. NYC is a lot flatter.
3. Better mexican food. Harder to find a decent burrito in NYC.
