I am very strongly considering going to school to become a teacher. I am currenlty finishing up my MBA and considering completing a elementry teachers education program afterwards. The program will allow me to get endorsements to teach grades 6-9 in addition to elementry education. I have four children and one has severe autism and epilepsy; being a teacher would give me the hours I need to be with my family.

For those of you who are teachers....do you love your job? Would you recommend your career for others? My son having a disability has caused me to fight for much of his education...I don't always agree with how the school system does things. But I am still interested in a career to teach a little bit older students (3rd -8th or even high school). Please give me any and all advice.

The schedule of a teacher cannot be beat if you have a family, especially if you work in the same county (summers off, snow days, certain holidays, etc.) The hours are excellent. However, I wouldn't recommend entering the field of education specifically for that reason. It can be very demanding, stressful, and requires a lot of patience. However, it is very rewarding to know that you have made a difference in the lives of children, and in the end, that definitely outweighs the negatives of teaching. Try substituting or volunteering in your school system. See what it's all about and see if you enjoy it. There are some programs in the country that will allow you to get a Master's in education, without having a Bachelors. However, usually these sorts of programs only allow you to teach on the middle and high school level. If everything goes as planned, I will be beginning my graduate studies in education this summer. Hope this helps and good luck.

I am working on getting my teaching degree, if you feel you would be a good teacher then go for.

Plus if you don't like the system sometimes, it will never change if people don't try to do something about it.

Plus your sons disability allows you to offer help to student and parents who may face the same problem, or any learning problems. Understanding teacher can be the best!!!

Teaching is hard yet rewarding. Often the reward is in the progress of your students, sometimes it's the return of a student with thanks.

You CAN change someone's life, it is worth it -- a life of service is the best life.
