I Would go to the landlord first let them know that you have unwanted guest. To see if they hire an exterminator. But a quick fix rat trap..... And yes there is a health issue......

getting a cat is not the solution as someone might have put out some poison that the cat will ingest and die from if it does manage to catch the rat.
here is a rodent poison that is harmless to humans
2 ounces of barium carbonate
1/2 ounce of granulated sugar
1/2 pound of bread crumbs
place all ingredients in a bowl and mix very well. add a small amount of water to the mixture and roll into small balls. place the balls around the apartment, basement and laundry rooms.
if you want to just do traps use either peanut butter or cotton balls (female rats will grab these up to use for nesting materials)

Get a cat...really. All other methods are cruel. The cat & rat will work simbiotically. Cat as predator, rat as prey...it's a fair game of nature. If the cat catches the rat so be it. Usually just having the predator in your house will make the vermin go away.

Call the Board of Health. They will force the landlord to immediately bump the rat off..Yes, it is possible to get several deceases from rat droppings.. Do you recall the Plague in Europe????Caused by fleas that the rats carried..

Just use a good ol'fashioned rat trap , bait it with peanut butter (works every time) . I wouldn't be as concerned with getting ill due to the presence of the rat , as i would be with what may have attracted it .

Best bet is to use poisons, but if you think you'll get affected as well, try some traps with cheese or some kind of food.

Get one of those sticky traps. Put a spoonful of peanut butter on it, and you will have your critter within 24hrs.
Make sure you put them where the droppings are...
