There's a white spot on my laptop's TFT. It's a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo with a 15.4'' widescreen TFT. Is this a serious issue or can it be fixed?

Cannot be fixed.
It is a burnt pixel ... most LCDs have an average of 3.

See you manufacturer warranty for their tolerance policy on this issue.
Some LCD manufacturers will replace the product depending on where (on the screen) the burnt pixel is located.

FYI - Never apply pressure to the screen....this can do more harm than good.

The white spot can be one of two things: a dead pixel or a hot pixel.
both are common in laptop displays, and it's a normal thing that happens all the time. Let me explain why:

Firstly, the displays are made to very exacting standards, but since there are thousands made in a single batch, some are bound to slip through the cracks. Most of the dead or hot pixels are usually found at the edges of the screen, where we don't notice them. sometimes, during the normal course of operation, some will go dead or hot in the middle of the screen. (annoying as all hell, I know) but not a big problem.

A pixel on any color display has three variable values affixed to it: Red, Green, Blue. these are the three primary colors. They combine to make any possible color discernable to the human eye, and even a few we can't see. How many flashy colors your display can show depends on your graphics hardware.

A dead pixel is one where all three colors are either not receiving a signal, or not receiving power at all. it's a common problem, and it's not fixable without replacing the entire display. If you use your machine for heavy graphics, or video editing, you may consider buying another computer, or having the screen in your laptop replaced.

A hot pixel on the other hand is receiving power just fine, and most likely a video signal too, however, either a burnt out transistor or a ground or short somewhere in the millions of tiny connections inside the screen itself causes the pixel to be permanently stuck to the "ON" position all the time. it can be very annoying, especially if you use the screen for watching movies or television, sometimes these 'hot' pixels come in and out as they please, or stay there forever, annoying you to no end. Again, I'll recommend either buying a new computer, or having the display replaced. Both are expensive options.

Don't worry about it if it's one or two, if you have the bottom corner of your screen go dead, then you might start shopping for another screen!

Another thing, some people may tell you to give it a good hard tap or push, this is the absolute WORST thing you could do for your TFT, as the acronym TFT stands for "thin film transistor". The reason I say this is that there are millions of tiny connections inside a single square inch of the display, and pushing on the display would be the equivalent of dropping a bowling ball on an anthill, there's a delicate infrastructure inside. Pressing on the monitor can only make it worse.

Hope you find this helpful!
