I have been several times. I wouldn't recommend going on vacation unless you like inconveniences, sub-par everything and overall general difficulty. Why go to Bulgaria when there are many many far better laces to go in that area of the world? As for the guy above, hearsay doesn't match up to personal experience, who cares what your friend says? Of course she brags about the place if she is from there.

I almost went to visit Bulgaria for a few days this past November, but I was also in the process of moving and ended up having to scrap that plan, unfortunately. I have a very good friend who is from Bulgaria, and I know she would disagree with the negative assessment of one of the previous answerers before me. Although I haven't been to Bulgaria myself (yet), I've looked at many, many pictures of the country and it's got countless beautiful locations that resemble many other places in Europe. It also has the advantage of being far, far less expensive than most of its EU cousins... a bus or train ride across the country costs only a couple of dollars, and at one point I had made plans to stay at a hostel in central Sofia (for my botched plans for visiting a few months ago) that would've only cost me about 10 euro a night. You'd never see that in Germany or France or the UK or most other western EU countries. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, as they say; many visitors to Europe expect certain things when they go someplace new, and if you're expecting all the same conveniences or appearances in Sofia that you'd find in Rome, Berlin, Paris, or London, of course you'd be disappointed. Sofia isn't any of those places. Bulgaria isn't France. Give it the credit it deserves, do a little research before you go, and try new things when you DO go (that goes for any new place, especially someplace well off the beaten path, like Bulgaria), and you might just be pleasantly surprised.

I have been through Bulgaria a few times in the past year. Unless you go there for business, I would avoid it for a vacation. The only decent city is Sofia, and it's still not one of the more desirable places to go in Europe.
