If it were me (and no, it's not all about me lol) I would indeed take a screwdriver to it. That would make my skin crawl. There must be some food underneath that is attracting them or they would be coming. So as I see it, it has to be cleaned inside.
You could cook 'em, but I don't know if that's an option. You have nothing to loose if you take it apart, right?
Good luck

Well, Julie, I would just turn the grill on and sit back and give it about a half an hour or two bottles of beer, whichever occurs first. At the end of half an hour, and it cools off,Shake the hell out of it and any parts left inside should fall out..Give it a bath and you are ready to go grilling......

Just plug it in and turn it on. The ants will either run out or be burned to a tiny gray ash. If you are concerned about the sanitary aspect you shouldn't worry. The heat kills all germs that they may have been carrying.

Just plug it in and watch it. If the ants come out then kill them and if they don't then maybe they have left. Be sure to clean it well after every use. Do not throw it away, there is no need.

plug in the grill and then the ants will either run out, and kill them or they'll get cooked inside of the grill.

Yuk. Throw it out. Why are there ants in it? You need to clean that thing out. If it's that hard to clean, I woudn't want to keep it. It must be loaded with germs from food or grease you can't see to clean out.
